Up for sale is an extremely rare exquisite Tanzanite oval cut gemstone weighing 12.52 carats. A genuine registered Certificate of Authenticity from Diamonds International accompanies this gorgeous bluish purple gemstone. This tanzanite was purchased from Diamonds International North American Regional Sales Director Tom Kearns on August 19th, 2008.

Tanzanite is the blue/purple variety of the mineral zoisite (a calcium aluminum hydroxyl Sorosilicate) belonging to the epidote group. It was discovered in the Mererani Hills of Manyara Region in northern Tanzania in 1967, near the city of Arusha and Mount Kilimanjaro (D-Block). The mineral was named by Tiffany & Co. after Tanzania, the country in which it was discovered. Tanzania is the only country in the world that produces Tanzanite gemstones.
In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association chose Tanzanite as a December birthstone, the first change to their birthstone list since 1912.
On July 1st, 2010 the Tanzanian Government restricted the export of all Tanzanite over 1gm size in Rough form.
